"Fall in love with Warsaw like the Mermaid.
The Eight Centuries of the Warsaw Mermaid. "
Dates: Aug 26 – Sept 7, 2010
An exhibition organised for the 20th anniversary of restoring the pre-war coat of arms to the capital by the City Council. It allowed the public to embark on an interesting journey with the Mermaid through eight centuries. The exposition shows archival materials reflecting the changes of the city symbol – the Warsaw Mermaid.
Warsaw’s crest, representing a mermaid, has began forming in the first half of the 14th century. The 55 images of the Warsaw Mermaid, selected for the exhibition, indicate the artistic tastes of the citizens and their attachment to the city emblem. Even when for a hundred years, from 1811 until 1915, the mermaid wasn’t Warsaw’s crest, the patriotic citizens put her image on trademarks of many city companies, on book covers, on occasional medals, coins and postcards. The mermaid has also become a popular architectural and ornamental theme, placed on buildings, gates, fountains, at the entrances to city market places and market halls, as well as the bridge piers. She’s always been associated with Warsaw, being the city’s distinctive symbol. Also at present, she encourages everyone to visit Warsaw from the city’s promotional logo with the catch-phrase: “Fall in love with Warsaw.”
