"THE SINGING OF THE WALLS 44" CONCERT

The 70th anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising
July 31, 2014, 20.30 hrs., Plac Krasińskich

The Singing of the Walls 44 concert, directed by Jerzy Bielunas, featured images of those 63 days of struggle, determination, euphoria and youthful enthusiasm which finally faded away.

The title of the concert was taken from the poem by Tadeusz Gajcy Śpiew murów (The Singing of the Walls). Those often harrowing memories and accounts were told by the voices of renowned artists, involved in projects about the Uprising for years. They are: Stanisława Celińska, Małgorzata Hajewska-Krzysztofik, Kinga Preis, Adam Woronowicz, Adam Nowak, Janusz Radek, Natalia Niemen, Mateusz Pospieszalski, as well as the actors of the youngest generation, this year's graduates from the PWST (the National Academy of Dramatic Arts): Michał Czaderna and Tomasz Piotrowski. They were accompanied by the choir, string quartet and a music band conducted by Mateusz Pospieszalski.

A prominent role in the concert was also played by the constantly changing stage design which allowed us to see new spaces at all times: the streets where fighting takes place, the floors of destroyed houses, the cellars and the city sewers, the skeletons of burnt houses, as well as the harmonious, beautiful images of the the pre-war Warsaw and the dynamic shots of the new, reconstructed capital.

THE DANCE OF FREEDOM

A show to celebrate 25 years of Freedom in the Multimedia Fountain Park
3 June 2014

The 40-minute performance depicted Poland's most recent history. Three acts: Enslavement, Hope and Victory showed our way to democracy and the emotions that accompanied the Poles from 1945 up until today.

In the visual, it used archival footage presented on a large 100 m2 screen, as well as a water screen on the fountains. The spectacle also featured reenactment groups which recreated three historical scenes: the events from December 1970 in Gdynia; the 1981 strike in the Wujek coal-mine; and finally, the first free election in 1989.

One of the main means of expression in the show was modern dance, with 35 dancers and acrobats appearing on stage. The fountains shone mostly with white and red – Poland's national colours. Those were also the colours of the final fireworks display, set to the song Dziwny jest ten świat by Czesław Niemen.

Among the audience were Polish President Bronisław Komorowski and President of Warsaw Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz.
